What is Sublimation?

Also known as digital sublimation or dye-sublimation, the process is generally used for printing on apparel, slides, signs, banners, mobile phone covers, plaques, mugs, and other items with sublimation-ready surfaces. The process of dye sublimation uses heat and pressure applied to a solid, turning it into a gas through an endothermic reaction without passing through the liquid phase.

During the sublimation process, gel inks are applied to sheets of “transfer” paper via a piezo-electric print head. Once the digital design is applied, the transfer sheets are placed on a heat press along with the substrate to be sublimated. The heat press combines time, temperature and pressure to transfer the sublimation dyes at a molecular level. This produces a near-permanent, high resolution, full colour print which will not crack, fade or peel from the substrate under normal use and conditions.
